  1. Everything You Did is a grandiose bit of muscular jazz rock containing a lyrical tease for The Eagles that they returned on Hotel California - all very amicable. The Royal Scam is an impressive six minute plus slow burner of a track to conclude this sometimes overlooked album. Personally, I don't think there is a bad track on it/5().

  6. The Royal Scam is the first Steely Dan record that doesn't exhibit significant musical progress from its predecessor, but that doesn't mean the album is any less interesting. The cynicism that was suppressed on Katy Lied comes roaring to the surface on The Royal Scam-- not only are the lyrics bitter and snide, but the music is terse, broken, and weary.
  7. * Items below may differ depending on the release. Review Widely considered Steely Dan's weakest effort, The Royal Scam actually remains one of their most enjoyable. No lasting hits here, but "Kid Charlemagne" updates classic gangster movies for the cocaine and 'ludes era while "Sign In Stranger" presaged Fagen's combination of film noir and Sci Fi that would resurface in the Kamarkiriad album.
  8. The Royal Scam is the fifth studio album by Steely Dan, originally released by ABC Records in The album went gold and peaked at #15 on the charts. The Royal Scam features more prominent guitar work than the prior Steely Dan album, Katy Lied, .
